Can Your Paper Cups Be Recycled?

Martyn Herriott - Tuesday, May 31, 2016

It was tremendous to receive an email from Sarah Woodward of The Paper Cup Company last week explaining the work their business has began to undertake following the news (predominately) on Social Media about the issues around the recycling of paper cups.

The Paper Cup Company is committed to creating a plan for advising the take away coffee industry on providing the correct recycling instructions and organising of the correct disposal of paper cups. To help, they want to make us all aware of the recycling channels and what can be done about it to reduce the number of paper cups ending up in landfill.

The Paper Cup Company is in discussions with Hubbub (www.hubbub.co.uk) in Manchester to set up a collection for paper cup recycling. Hubbub are commencing trials in June with 10 specialist paper cup bins in the vicinity of Manchester's Oxford Street Railway Station. This will test public willingness to recycle cups on the move and explore the logistics to create an effecient recycling scheme nationwide. if you are a coffee shop in Manchester and would like to take part in the trial, please contact Hubbub directly at trewin@hubbub.org.uk .

If you want to learn more about this initiative, contact Hubbub or Sarah Woodward at The Paper Cup Company, Clitheroe; sarah.woodward@thepapercupcompany.co.uk.

2.5 billion paper coffee cups are thrown away in the UK each year. The issue of disposable cups as an environmental problem is not new and has been discussed for many years within the industry. And it is still possible that steps can be made to make better recyclable cups and improve the process by which they can be recycled.
